The Ant & The Grasshopper
“Ah,summer!” giggled the green grasshopper.The warm days and balmy nights made his heart sing as he hopped and played and then hopped some more.”life is good,” thought grasshopper.”I only wish for a friend to pass the time with me.”
Just as grasshopper was wishing for a friend, an ant marched by carrying a great load of food. “Hello,Ant ,”called the grasshopper in a friendly manner.”How about joining me for an afternoon of fun and good conversation?You look as though you could use a rest.”
The ant did not break stride as he sniffed,”A rest indeed! I am much too busy storing food for the winter months.you would be wise to follow my example.”
Grasshopper was somewhat baffled by the ant’s response.”Just look around,Ant.there is food enough for everyong and I cannot possibly think about winter on such a glorious day as this!”
Ant just shook his head and continued with his task. Back and forth he marched carrying bits of this and that to his colony. meanwhile,Grasshopper returned to his hopping and singing while basking in the sunshine.
Grasshopper passed his time lazily all summer while ant continued his work more urgently than ever .The days were growing shorter now and the chilly nights warned of the winter months ahead.
Grasshopper chirped,”Surely you must have stored enough food by now, ant. Won’t you join me for some fun at last?”but Ant barely slowed his pace as he again suggested, “Your time would be better spent gathering food before the freeze.”
Winter arrived with a fury of wind and snow. Grasshopper could not find any food to eat and soon was miserable.At last he understood what Ant had been trying to tell him all summer long,for he could see the ants sharing their stores of vegetables and grains. “Ah,” Grasshopper thought sadly, “it is wise to work now and play later.”
