A moment of silence was observed Wednesday morning ahead of the Olympic torch relay in south China's Jiangxi province. The Beijing Organizing Committee has also announced it will downscale the relay in China in view of the devastation of Monday's earthquake.

On Wednesday, a donating ceremony was held in the headquarters of General Administration of Sport of China.

Liu Xiang, the 110-meter hurdles champion in 2004 Olympics, and his coach jointly donated 500,000 yuan or over 70,000 US dollars.

"Although I can't take part in the rescue work in person, my heart is with the people in disaster-hit areas all the time. I am determined to make a tiny contribution to the rescue work with my efforts."

Nearly 500 Chinese athletes to the Beijing Olympics and their coaches attended the ceremony to offer donations to earthquake victims in southwest China.
