Following Monday's earthquake, people from across the country are coming forward to donate to various relief funds.

But many complain that they are charged by banks and post offices when wiring money from other provinces.

The Beijing Youth Daily carries a commentary saying that banks should alter their policies temporarily to encourage more people to donate to the needy in Sichuan. Even if the bank normally charges for trans-regional deposits and withdrawals, they should not make money during a catastrophe.

After all, the paper says, the processing fees add up to a large number, which should ideally be reaching quake victims, not making the bank richer.

The paper goes on to say that banks and post offices seem to have a more laid-back attitude, as compared to ordinary people who are going all out to help victims in quake-hit regions.

Although banks are merely executing company policy and do not necessarily mean to make huge profits during the disaster, their indifference and lack of social responsibility may have quite a negative impact.

The paper also urges relevant government departments to adopt effective measures to guarantee that all the donated money reaches the quake-hit region without any hindrance.
