The United Nations relief agency has expressed the hope to transport cyclone relief supplies across the border from Thailand into Myanmar.

Vivian Tan, spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency, details what they are trying to do to provide assistance.

''Currently, we are loading the trucks at Mae Sot, the border town in Thailand. We are loading about tents and plastic sheets for 10-thousand people and we will bring into Myanmar this afternoon.''

More than 60 thousand people have died or gone missing after the cyclone last week.

Relief workers are far from reaching most of these people, who are without food or safe drinking water.

Richard Horsey is the official in charge of coordinating the aid efforts of ten UN agencies. He emphasizes that if living and medical necessities cannot reach affected regions as soon as possible, the risk of infection will remain high.

''There is a huge risk that diarrhea disease, cholera and so on could start to spread, because there is a lack of clean drinking water, a lack of sanitation facilities.''

The Myanmar government has made it clear that it welcomes other countries' efforts to extend humanitarian assistance to the victims of Cyclone Nargis.
