The minister of science and technology says the Olympic torch relay to the summit of Mount Qomolangma was a perfect combination of sports, science and technology.

Wan Gang introduces that scientists and engineers had been working very hard to overcome difficulties for a successful ascent to the world peak, which included invention of specially-designed torches and ignitors that can be used with less oxygen.

"After more than two years of hard work by our research and development team, we are very happy to see that our climbers have reached the top of Mount Everest with the Olympic flame."

The minister also stressed that Olympic events need to be supported by science and technology and with state-of-the-art systems, the 2008 Beijing Games is set to be the most technologically-advanced and environment-friendly Olympics ever.

"Ever since winning the bid for 2008 Olympics, the country has overcome many technical difficulties. Advanced technologies are being used in fields such as venue construction and match organization."

Wan Gang added the Beijing Olympic venues will be the first ones in history to achieve a "zero emission" status, thanks to environment-friendly vehicles being used for the event.

Wan said after the games, these technologies will be used to better serve people and boost economic growth.
