President Hu urges college students to turn patriotism into diligence in study
President Hu Jintao has called on China's universities to enhance their innovation capability. Hu made the comments during a visit to Peking University, on the eve of China's Youth Day and the university's 110th anniversary. He also extended his greetings to the university's alumni around the world.
May 3th marks the eve of 110-year journey of Peking University, one of China's best known universities.
Hu Jintao's first stop was the exhibition hall of the University's history. He described its journey over more than a century as "extraordinary". Hu Jintao praised Peking University for its great efforts promoting China's development and revitalization. He said it has made considerable achievements in teaching and researching, and is a world-class university.
In the university's library, Hu Jintao was happy to see many students studying during the Labor Day holiday.
Chinese President Hu Jintao said, "Studying in university is the most beautiful time in one's life. I hope you treasure the time to read, think and practice as much as you can. Only with accumulation of knowledge and thorough practice of what you've learnt, you can turn knowledge into the capability of serving the society, and turn yourselves into talents of the country."
As a university offering a comprehensive study program, Peking University has made key achievements in both social and natural sciences.
Hu Jintao then visited the campus's museum and College of Life Sciences.
He said China's renowned universities should increase efforts to enhance the country's innovation and to educate more talented students to help achieve that goal.
Peking University is actively increasing exchanges with other universities around the globe. Currently, it cooperates with more than 200 universities around the world. Over 5,000 foreign students are now studying on its campus.
Hu Jintao visited the residences of foreign students and hoped they could promote friendship and cultural exchanges between different nations.
Hu Jintao said he hoped all the foreign students would have an unforgettable experience at Peking University.
Hu Jintao said, "I sincerely hope that foreign students will get along well with Chinese classmates, study hard, learn from each other's advantages and make progress together. I hope all of you can make efforts for better understanding between different countries and world peace and development."
During talks with management and students, Hu Jintao said he hoped they could turn their patriotism into a daily effort to maintain the country's stability and benefit. He also asked the university to continue with its leading academic achievements, raising research levels and participation in international exchanges.
