Kate and Sallie, high school classmates, spend a lot of time shopping together. Kate enjoys Sallie’s friendship, but one of Sallie’s bad habits is really starting to bother her. When there aren’t any trashcans around, Sallie just throws her trash on the ground.
One Saturday afternoon, Kate and Sallie go to their favorite part of town. The busy streets and large number of stores make it a great place to shop. They’re hungry, so they buy some fried chicken to eat as they walk around. Just as they finish eating, Sallie notices some dresses in a store window. She has finished eating and is ready to shop. But Kate is looking around for a trashcan so Sallie won’t litter.
If you were Kate, what would you do?
Decision 1
Sallie: Oh, look at those dresses! Let's go into this store, Kate!
(Sallie drops her empty food trash on the ground.)
Kate: Uh…
Sallie: Is something wrong?
Kate: No…Well, actually yes.
(Kate picks up Sallie’s trash.)
Sallie: Kate, what are you doing? That’s disgusting!
Kate:Sallie, dropping trash on the ground is disgusting! You’re littering.
Sallie: It doesn’t matter. Somebody will pick it up later… people get paid to do that.
Kate: Like who?
Sallie: Doesn’t the city hire people to clean up trash?
Kate:No. People are responsible for throwing away their own trash. (loudly) That includes you !
Sallie: Hey, why are you yelling at me?
Kate: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to raise my voice. But you really shouldn’t litter.
Sallie: I guess you’re right.
Kate: Let’s go find a trashcan, OK?
Sallie: OK.
