1. For the first time in history, the World Series is finally inviting the world! The series has always been an American tradition, a contest between the top baseball teams of the National and American Leagues, But next year’s series, played in the Tokyo Dome in Japan, will feature four teams — the top teams in North America, Asia, and the Caribbean, plus a wild card team from one of those three regions.

2. We have just learned that at least six students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a high school in eastern Arizona today. Police indicated that a 17-year-old boy opened fire with an automatic weapon in the gymnasium during P.E. class. The boy, whose name has not been released by authorities, is in custody and is being questioned. We’ll have an update on this tragedy as son as we get more details.

3. What might be the most incredible breakthrough in medicine in recent years has been reported at the University of Hawaii. Researchers at the university have developed a drug that appears to cure almost every kind of cancer. To date , over 300 cancer patients who have been given the drug have shown no trace of cancer anywhere in their bodies for the past two years.

4. Today India tested two nuclear missiles in response to Pakistan’s missile testing yesterday. In the meantime, fighting has escalated in Kashmir, a region that has been under dispute for years. When asked about India’s tests, Pakistan’s Prime Minister said, “Kashmir is a vital strategic site. Pakistan is not going to back down.” India’s prime minister could not be reached for comment.

1. David seems to be — he doesn’t like it when other countries do testing of nuclear missiles. Nehal is not worried because India and Pakistan have been threatening each other her whole life.

David: What’s this I hear in the news about India and Pakistan?

Nehal: They’re at it again.

David: What do you mean—they’re at it again?

Nehal: They just cannot get along together.

David: This news story says they’re testing missiles. Isn’t that serious?

Nehal: Well, it’s more like flexing their muscles than actually doing something serious. They’re just trying to intimidate each other.

David: It’s kind of scary, though, isn’t it?

Nehal: I’m used to it by now. They’ve been threatening each other my whole life.

David: But why?

Nehal: They’ve been fighting about Kashmir. They disagree about who controls Kashmir.

David: Yeah? What is it that’s so important about Kashmir any way? I mean, why? Why do India and Pakistan care so much about Kashmir?

Nehal: Actually, they don’t care about Kashmir.

David: Huh? What do you mean?

Nehal: No. All India and Pakistan care about is fighting with each other. Each one wants to have more power than the other.

David: So why do they keep talking about Kashmir?

Nehal: It’s just an excuse.

David: still, I don’t like it when they start playing with nuclear weapons. Maybe the U.N. should get involved.

Nehal: Ah, yes. Their usual role as the great peace keeper.

David: Don’t you think the U.N. could resolve this problem?

Nehal: I don’t think so. The U.N. doesn’t need to get involved in other countries’ business. It has enough problems of its own.
