The Chinese News Agency says China is population has grown to

1,031,000,000 persons.This number inclubes the people on Hongkong,

Taiwan and Macao. The reports said there has been a 45% increase in the
Chinese population since the last count was made in 1964. But the news

agency said that strong birth control measures have been successful.It

said there are now only 15 babies born for every 1,000 persons.Four

years ago about 28 babies were born in China for every 1,000 persons.

hundred-million-dollar loan to the International Monetary Fund one year
earlier than pjlanned. The Chinese News Agency said the government

would begin repjaying the loan on Friday.Experts said that China is

able to repay the loan now because its economy has improved

American scienctists say they believe trees can warn each other
of danger by releasing chemicals into the air. The theory announced by

the National Science Foundation is the result of studies carried out by

scientists in the states of Washington and New Hampshire
The scientists said they found that when trees are under attack by
disease or insects, nearby trees take the same defensive actions as the

trees being attacked. And they said it appears that the trees being
attacked may produce and send out chemicals to warn the other trees
