Lesson 10. What Are Friends For?

Jane meets her old friend, Fred.

J: Hi, Fred! How's everything?

F: Not so good, I'm afraid. Supporting a family is becoming more and more difficult these days.

J: What you say can't be more true. Everything is so expensive. I can hardly make ends meet myself.

F: Oh, really? Do you need any money? What I have is not much, but I can loan you some.

J: I'm OK. Thanks for being so thoughtful anyway.

F: What are friends for?

and also here ,on page sixty five ,there is a dialogue and this is something that we are going to talk about .and notice this,we are here just to teach you or to help you with your english .

and today's lesson ,lesson ten,is called "what are friends for?" comn on, that's easy .why ? to borrow money from .

well,i know ,you like money ,"i will borrow you some",that's wrong .

in Bruce's dictionary ,there is no such a word as "lend".

be careful ,when i have no money ,i have to borrow money from my good friend Peter ,Peter is a kind man at heart ,so he lends me money .

he is trying to flatter me .flatter 奉承 flattery

flattering[flattery] will not get you anywhere .

Jane greets Fred by saying :hi ,how is everthing ?

this verb is spelled g-r-e-e-t .this verb has a noun "greeting".

"hi" is a friendly greeting . don't forget to greeting him when you see him .this is a considerate behavior ,polite behavior .

i'm afraid that not everything is so good .

well,in fact,you know ,i have some trouble .i hate to tell you ,now that you bring up this question ,still i have to say :well ,i'm not in a good situation .

指好的方面：i think that he has past the examination .

Peter is afraid[scared frightend] of snakes .

many girls are frightend of cockroachers .

the weather[it] is getting warmer and warmer .

support a family 养家 back you up 支持

i'll support you . i'll side with you . l'll take sides with you .

to support ,you can say i'll back you up .

you'll have my support .

what you say is really ture .

can[could] not be + 比较级 再......不过了
