Can You Help Us?

I. Tapescript

Waiter Good evening, sir, madam. A table for two?

Man No, thank you. But we have a small problem. Can you help us?

Waiter Sure. What can I do for you?

Man We are looking for a hotel. Are there any hotels near here?

Waiter Yes, there are some hotels in this street. The nearest one is next to the bank. It's quite modern.

Woman Do you think there're any inexpensive ones nearby? We're leaving tomorrow morning.

Waiter Yes. Drive west for about two minutes and you will find a grey building on the right side. It's a traditional family-style hotel, very comfortable, and the price is quite reasonable.

Woman It sounds nice. Thank you very much for your help.

Waiter That's all right.

II. Language and Culture Notes

1. Sir is a polite way of addressing a man, often used by a waiter or a waitress to address a male customer.

2. No, thank you is a polite expression used when someone offers you something that you don't want.

e.g. A: Do you want any coffee?

B: No, thank you.

Can We Help You?

I. Tapescript

Mr and Mrs Jones very seldom go out in the evening, but last Saturday Mrs Jones said to her husband, 'There's a good film at the cinema tonight. Can we go and see it?'

They came out of the cinema at 11 o'clock, got into their car and began driving home. It was quite dark. Then Mrs Jones said, 'Look, Bill. A woman is running along the road very fast, and a man's running after her. Can you see them?'

Mr Jones said, 'Yes, I can.' He drove the car slowly near the woman and said to her, 'Can we help you?'

'No, thank you,' the woman said, but she did not stop running. 'My husband and I always run home after the cinema, and the slower one washes the dishes at home.'

II. Language and Culture Notes

1. In the story, Mr and Mrs Jones suspected that the man running after the woman had ill intention, so they wanted to give her a lift in their car.

2. Can we / I help you? is an expression one uses to offer assistance to others.
