Leah: Were you here all night?
D: what time is it?
Leah: It's a little after nine.
Dashan: I'm assuming that's a.m.? I better shake the cobwebs out.
D: I had to stop by the hospital and it threw my schedule a little out of whack.
L: I told you've been working too hard.
D: You're right about that. It's one of the little guys that I coach on the soccer team. He had to go in for a surgery on a hernia.
Leah: I hope you don't think I'm stupid, but what is a hernia?
D: It's when the stomach protrudes through the wall of the abdomen. Anyway, while I was at the hospital I thought I would try to get permission to film the surgery for our series.
Leah: Good idea. Now, I hope you don't get mad at me but I went ahead and booked you for five days at a resort in Whistler.
Dashan: We've still got the final editing to do. We have to put in all the music and sound effects. I don't know.
Leah: And you're only a phone call away if I need you. Promise me you'll think about it?
Dashan(VO): North York General's been open for about thirty years and many you'd doctors have trained there. The hospital also has a large number of volunteers. Since 1968, these volunteers have contributed well over two million hours of their time. Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to Grace's Place?
Volunteer: yes, the easiest way to go, I believe, would be to go down this way and through the double doors and then turn left and you'll get to Grace's Place.
D: I've never seen anything like this in a hospital.
Dr Grace: It's a great place for kids to play and relax with their parents and do their own little creative thing before they go in and have surgery.
D: So the children can play and read books and almost forget they are in a hospital.
Dr Grace: it's home away from home.
Dr Grace: Normally, we don't do that. But I don't see why we can't. And I'll just go next-door and let them know that you'd like to do that and make the arrangement.
See you in five minutes outside.
Cameron: Hi, Dashan.
D: Hey, Cameron. Give me five. Nancy, Jim.
Nancy: Thanks for recommending Dr Grace for us.
Dashan: you've in good hands.
D: Man, that was a great goal you got last night.
Cameron: That was the hardest kick. I've ever done in my life.
D: really, eh. Right into the top corner. Dr Grace will have you up on your feet in no time. And she's also said it's okay if I observe the surgery. So, I'm going to go and scrub up now. Okay?
Cameron: Okay.
D: See you in a bit.
Leah: Cameron seems like a very brave little boy.
Dashan: He was great, joking all the time. I think I was more nervous than he was. They fixed me up with a sterile gown and gloves and I was off to scrub with Dr Grace. So, I don't know if they told you or not but I'm Cameron's soccer coach.
D: He's a great little kid.
Leah: Doctor dashan.
D: hardly.
Leah: I'm still impressed though. I've never even visited a hospital, let alone being inside an operation room.
D: My daughter was actually born in this hospital.
Leah: No kidding.
Dashan: It's really great. Some hospital can feel cold and sterile and frightening. But this one's different. They really try to make the patient feel relaxed. Especially the kids. It can make a real difference.
