W: In many parts of the world people clap hands to show that they like or agree to something. In the theater, at a concert, or at a fortball game, people clap hands after they see somehing they like. In Russia, the actors, performers, and athletes clap together with the audience. In most countries, however, the performers are happy to receive the applause. They don't clap back to their fans.A very long time ago clapping meant the opposite of what it means now. When poople did not like an actor or a performer they clapped. They were trying to make as much noise as possible. They continued to c1ap until the actor left the stage. At some time in history the meaning of clapping changed. Now when an audience wants to show great admiration for a performer, they not only clap but stand up and clap. That is called a standing ovation. A standing ovation is the dream of every performer. Many actors say that is what they work so hard for -Applause ! Applause !
