A senior Chinese anti-doping official said on Wednesday that Beijing is ready for doping tests at the upcoming Olympics. He expressed that the country promises to host a "clean" Games.
Wu Moutian, deputy director of the Chinese Anti-doping Agency, said reliable testing methods will be used, as China has invested to build the most sophisticated anti-doping laboratories in the world.
"The methods have passed qualification tests by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The new tests can also precisely detect HGH or human growth hormone in athletes."
HGH is a substance that boosts strength and speeds recovery from injury. It was previously undetectable 48 hours after being consumed. This time, the new test kits for the Beijing Olympics will be able to track the use of HGH beyond the time limit.
Dope testing at the Olympics began on July 27 and will run until the Games end.
A total of 4,500 doping controls, including 900 blood tests, are planned in the Games, a 25 percent rise from the Athens Olympics four years ago. In the Athens Games, 26 athletes were tested positive for doping, which was the most in Olympic history.
China in recent years has strengthened doping tests among its athletes. Three Chinese Olympic hopefuls have been punished for doping in the past month, including swimmer Ouyang Kunpeng, free style wrestler Luo Meng and race walker Song Hongjuan. Altogether, China has logged eight cases of drug violations since January.
