Beijing suspends some heavy polluters as Olympic Games near
More than 150 heavy industrial polluters in Beijing suspended production on Sunday. The new rules are in effect for two months in a bid to cut pollution and improve air quality.
In the Yanshan Cement Plant in Beijing's western suburbs, paper seals have been placed on workshop doors. Another heavy polluter -- the Beijing Capital Iron and Steel Group, or Shougang -- is being told to cut output by 70 percent by shutting down four of its five steel-making furnaces.
As part of its Olympic bid, Beijing promised to clean up its air quality for the Games. Various neighboring areas -- including Tianjian Municipality and Hebei and Shanxi provinces have also taken similar measures to cut pollution.
