After sweeping through Taiwan, typhoon Kalmaegi weakened into a severe tropical storm early on Friday. Later, Kalmaegi made landfall in the coastal area of east China's Fujian Province. 11 cities and counties in the province reported precipitation of 50 to 100 millimeters by 4 p.m.
At about 6 o'clock on Friday afternoon, Kalmaegi landed in Xiapu county, packing winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour.
Fujian had evacuated nearly 30 thousand people in coastal areas, and thirty-five thousand fishing vessels returning to harbor.
The provincial educational department also issued a notice, ordering school classes halted during the storm period.
The tropical storm was forecast to continue moving northwestward, likely to make landfall in neighboring Zhejiang province and Shanghai later on Saturday. These areas are bracing for rainstorms and strong gales.
At least six people were dead after Typhoon Kalmaegi swept into Taiwan on Thursday. Several others were reported missing.
The storm also cut-off water supplies to hundreds of thousands of households on Taiwan island. Many key roads were damaged and rail services were halted in some areas.
