India: Textile industry demands ban on cotton exports
Thousands of Indian workers in the textile industry are demanding a ban on cotton exports. Cotton prices in the domestic market shot up by 35 percent over the last year.
Workers from various textile associations took to the streets protesting against the export of raw cotton and a hike in the price of cotton yarn.
Experts say the price of cotton has gone up in the domestic market because of the uncontrolled export of cotton and heavy yarn hoarding by international traders.
Industrialists fear, if the situation persists, textile manufacturers will suffer losses that will force them to close down.
