My name is Abbey Wolf. I am 31 years old. I have three children, Elena, who is six, Ethan who is three, and Isaac, who is two.
I am by trade, I guess, a social worker. I am currently a contract social worker for a private adoption agency called Bethany Christian Services, and in that I write home studies for families who are interested in adopting. And these are families who want to adopt children from the foster care system. Children who have been in foster care because of their problems of their biological families. They’ve been removed from their home because of abuse1 or neglect and have been in foster care since then. And these are kids who are for whatever reason unable to return home. So we are looking for permanent homes for them with adopted families. So these adopted families come through Bethany Christian Services. They go through a training, which I sometimes teach the training course for these parents, and then they have a home study written. So I go out of home and make three home visits, and interview them as far as why they choose to adopt, what they have to offer as adopt parents, how they feel they will be able to impact children’s lives. We talk about what type of child they want. What type of behavior they feel they can handle uh…things like that. And then I’ll write it up what is called a home study. So it’s a narrative about their life, and positive aspects of their lives, what, how their parenting skills are , things like that. Then I will turn that home study into my supervisor at Bethany Christian Services. And they’ll send that on to the state Office of Adoptions. The State Office of Adoptions will then register the family, and approve them and then there will be matching made to try to find adopted kids for them.
Before I did contract work, I did social work with the Department of Family and Children’s Services. I worked at Floyd County Department of Family and Children’s Services, and I worked at Bartow County Department of Family Community Services. I was what was called a “case manager”, and I worked in the foster care unit. So that is when kids were removed from their homes again because of abuse or neglect. And then I would work with the children and then with their families and tried to get them reunited. The parents would have case plan that would work on.. And we would try to work on specific goals what they need to work on to get the kids back home. And then if that did not happen though, then we will go towards termination of parental rights where kids will be then put up2 for adoption. We will look for adopt homes for them.
When I am not doing contract work, I am a homemaker and I am a housewife for my three kids and my husband. Those normal activities include laundry and cleaning the house and things like that, taking my daughter to and from school, taking my son to from preschool3, uh…things like that.
I’ve been doing contract social work for, see… about five years now. I was a social worker for the Department of Family and Children’s Services for two year before that. I became a contract social worker after I had my first child, decided that I want to stay at home, being primarily a stay home mom but wanted to do a little something outside of the home. So I began doing that job. I had some contacts, you know, in the field of social work and my name got passed to people at Bethany Christian Services who then called me if I want to come in to do some social work for them.. I love doing that type of work. because it gave me an opportunity to talk to families about something I am very comfortable with, with, you know, with the field of adoption. I like knowing that I am doing something to help the children who are less fortunate than us, who have had major upheavals in their home. And I am enjoying knowing that I’ve been able to help, maybe, place a child in a loving home. So they can have the loving stability of parents and family. Some of the problems that come up4 is, you know, if families don’t really have good expectations of what adoption is going to be like, and because these kids are kids, you know, they had issues and problems because of the abuse and trauma5 they’ve been through. So they have a lot of issues, behavior issues, and emotional issues, that a lot of parents maybe aren’t ready for, aren’t willing to handle, you know. They think the kids can just come in and they will just love them, and that take care of everything. That’s not. They need a lot of strict guidance and parenting6 to try to overcome some of the issues. To be a good social worker, and to need a lot of experience with children and issues of child development, and child behavior, as far social work in dealing with kids who has been in foster care system, I think you need some experience working in that field, working at the Department of Family and Children’s Services, getting experience about what behaviors and disciplinary issues there are with children who have been in foster care. I personally have a four year college degree from Barry College in the field of social work.. It’s called Family and Community Services, and that allow me to get a job at DFCS, which is a short way to say Department of Family and Children’s Services, DFCS. And from there when I was hired on DFCS, they then sent me to a six week training course to get more you know, more training in the field of how the state runs the foster care program. Let me see, the main challenge I think with my job are just the issues of dealing with the government and red tapes7 sometimes. The State Office of Adoption can sometimes be very picky8 about their families, and which they should, I agree, they should be picky, but they are often maybe nitpicky9 a little too much about certain issues that might not be very important. But I know that they are just trying to make sure they are getting good families for the kids.
