With an unprecedented amount of donations pouring into the quake-hit regions in China's Sichuan Province, the distribution of relief materials has aroused nation wide concern.
Some top governmental divisions held a press conference on Monday, pledging that relief supplies to the quake-stricken regions will be distributed promptly, effectively and transparently.
Chen Xi has the details.
Tens of billions of funds and huge amount of relief materials have been donated to China's Sichuan Province. At the press conference on Thursday, Vice Minister of Finance, Liao Xiaojun, reassured the public that the money and materials donated will be used wisely under the guidance of the law.
"All of the donation funds are monitored under relevant regulations. We will work with five other major ministries to conduct supervision and inspection work for the relief materials and money. The whole process will be carried out with the support of local financial officials and departments."
Head of Supervision Ministry and National Bureau of Corruption Prevention, Ma Wen detailed the means to combat the misuse of disaster relief materials.
"We will build a combined force of supervision, extending to the key regions, departments and chain, for a integrated network. To assure a public and transparent use of funds and materials is crucial to maintain the equity, trying to maximize the functions of the relief materials."
Ma Wen stressed that the ministry will severely punish anyone who embezzles relief funds.
So far, China has dispatched more than 6,000 professionals from the National Audit Office to help local audit authorities to supervise relief work.
National Audit Office chief Liu Jiayi admitted that problems still exist with strict auditing procedure in the regions.
"The problems there mainly remained particularly with the distribution and usage of consumptive foods, such as instant noodle, purified water and even tents."
The official added that the office will announce the auditing results each month starting this June.
Over 54 billion Yuan, or about 8 billion US dollars, of donation have been poured in the disaster-ravaged regions by the central and local departments.
