More than 150 Asian and European lawmakers have gathered in Beijing to exchange ideas on social and economic cooperation. Members attending the fifth Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting, or ASEP, say they are ready to advance their collaboration.

Although differences still remain between Asia and Europe, delegates attending the meeting focused on cooperation and common development.
Addressing the opening ceremony, China's top legislator Wu Bangguo urged member countries of the ASEP to strengthen dialogue on the basis of equality and mutual trust.
"We need to properly settle differences through equal consultation in the spirit of seeking common ground while removing differences, try to reach consensus and expand common interests."
As chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo also stressed that parliaments from different countries should play a unique role in international cooperation. He said China is willing to take an active part in supporting Asia-Europe cooperation.
His words were echoed by delegates from other countries.
Norica Nicolai is vice president of the Romanian Senate. He hoped that cooperation between the two continents can be carried out in a comprehensive way.
"Asia needs Europe and Europe needs Asia. And for our future development in all fields. I didn't mean only by economic development, I mean cultural exchange, civilization, markets, I believe it's mandatory to cooperate with each other in parliamentary relationship, because we are representatives for our people. It's one step for our long-term development."
As the chief organizer of the previous ASEP meeting in Helsinki two years ago, Guy Lindstrom from Finland thought highly of this year's meeting. He agreed that dialogues and exchange activities between different countries are necessary measures in solving current global problems.
"We have problems in the WTO Doha negotiations that I think you can help a bit by having open discussions like we are having here. And we have hope that this ASEP meeting will produce some concrete programs for exchange of young professionals. And I think that could be very helpful in the long run."
Prasobsook Boondech, President of the Senate from Thailand, also looked forward to talking with members from European parliaments.
"I think every country, especially Asia and Europe must cooperate in every aspect, and think about the whole world, not about their single country."
In addition, the senator said his government will provide a stable and beneficial environment for all foreign investors.
Initiated in 1996, the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting aims to enhance mutual understanding between Asia and Europe through increased dialogues among parliaments. It is held in turn every two years in Asia and Europe.
