Unit 47 All about Fashion
Part 1 Personal Aesthetic --- The Latest Buzzword in Fashion
Just in time for the new century, the new fashion trends offer a lot of choice to the customers. Instead of one main fashion look, fashion houses are offering a range of different looks. The new prediction for high fashion this year is "Personal Style" is in. as long as it's modern, you can wear whatever you want. That means any color and dress length is acceptable.
What is the reason behind the confused fashion scene this year? One Italian designer puts the confusion down to a world-wide reaction to the globalization of high fashion over the last ten years. Globalization has meant that all over the high-fashion world, fashion designers have influenced each other's designs. This has resulted in clear fashion trends, from the "power dressing" of the eighties, to "grunge" of the early nineties to conservative "chic" of recent years. In turn, the followers of high fashion have had no choice but to follow the season's new fashion. But no more.
This year, for the fist time on the fashion catwalks around in Europe and the USA, there is no definitive designer style to copy. Instead we now get to decide our own fashion style. The individual can now be truly individual. The latest trend is for the fashion-conscious to experiment with different styles. You try to work out your personal style, called "Personal Aesthetic". This style or "aesthetic" should suit your body as well as suiting your outlook on life and your personal philosophy.
This new freedom of choice hasn't meant total chaos on the fashion scene this year, however. Out of the main fashion centers of Milan, Paris, New York and London have come three main looks, the decorative, colorful "boho look", the "less is more" streamlined look and the new look, and the "mix and match" look,. Which one is your look?
Once you have worked out what style matches your body and your personality, try and stick with it. Be confident about yourself and your clothes. Of course, having a personal style doesn't mean never making any more changes in your fashion life. Use your Personal Aesthetic to filter new fashion influences. Remember, your Personal Aesthetic is an expression of your inner self.
Jenny: It's cold outside.
Peter: I know. That's why I'm wearing my new sweater tonight.
Jenny: Peter, you're going to burn up. I've got the heater on.
Peter: But it's cold outside.
Jenny: Peter, you need to learn to layer.
Peter: Layer?
Jenny: Yeah, you wear two to three layers.
Peter: Like a T-shirt, a button-down shirt and a vest?
Jenny: Sure! And then you could wear a windbreaker on top.
Peter: Sounds complicated.
比如说,She was wearing sun-glasses. He wore a gold chain round his neck. 还可以是颜色,比如说,He never wears white.
I wear my hair long. He wears a beard.
3. 在I've got the heater on. I've got the heater on. I have the heater on。 我们用一个对话来作例子,---What's that noise downstairs? ---Oh, I've got the radio on. 比如说,---Could you turn on the air conditioner? ---I've already turned it on./I already turned it on. Do you still feel hot?
Peter, you need to learn to layer. T-shirt, a button-down shirt and a vest穿在一起,外面再套一件防风夹克。
Jenny: But the more layers you wear, the warmer you'll be.
Peter: And you can take off a layer or two when you're indoors.
Jenny: You've got the idea!
Peter: So what about you? What are you going to wear?
Jenny: I'm going to wear my blue tank top.
Peter: A tank top? But that's sleeveless!
Jenny: I know, but I have a cardigan. And then I'll wear a miniskirt.
Peter: But your legs will freeze.
Jenny: That's why I wear leggings. I can take them off indoors!
Peter: So you're going to give us a show!
Jenny: Don't get your hopes up, Peter.
其中一条是the more layers you wear, the warmer you'll be.
You've got the idea! You've got the idea! You've got it.
3. 但是大家要注意了,这里的have got不能换成have,而应该看作是get在口语中“理解,懂得”的用法,就好像get the meaning/idea,所以我们可以说成You got it. 这里为了强调“当时恍然大悟”的感觉,所以用过去式表示,比如说,---So…I have to call Sandy to say I'm sorry? ---You've got it! /You got it!
Don't get your hopes up. 比如说,---How did your finals go? ---It went well, but I don't want to get my hopes up.
Part 3 Pick up What Suits You Best
Dialogue Script 1
Jenny: Peter, you look sick!
Peter: But I feel fine.
Jenny: You look greenish-yellow!
Peter: Then there must be something wrong with your eyes.
Jenny: No, it's your shirt. It's the wrong color!
Peter: But it's light pea green. It's cool!
Jenny: But it doesn't look good with your skin tone.
Peter: So?
Jenny: People with different skin tones look good in different colors.
Peter: So what colors should I wear?
Jenny: You're fair, so you should wear basic colors.
Peter: Like navy blue, red, or hunter green?
Jenny: Yeah. Or black. But those aren't for me.
Peter: Your skin is more olive-toned. Kind of yellow.
Jenny: So I look good in grays, browns and white.
Peter: Hmm...so when I buy clothes, I have to pay attention to the color?
Jenny: If you want to look your best.
Peter: I do! But a lot of my clothes are the colors that suit you.
Jenny: Then you can just give them to me!
Peter: Ha! Nice try, Jenny.
Then there must be something wrong with your eyes. there must be something wrong with ... 如果你觉得事有蹊跷,但是又说不出个所以然来,就可以用这个表达方式,来表达你心中的疑惑,比如说,---If she's so pretty, why doesn't she have a boyfriend? ---There must be something wrong with her.
But it doesn't look good with your skin tone. Does this jacket look good with these pants?
3. look good 后面还可以加上in,就是指“某人配某件东西很好看”,也就是someone looks good in something,比如说,You really look good in that dress. That shirt looks good on me.
Nice try, Jenny. 我们来举个例子,---If you're going to be gone for a month, then you won't mind if I use your computer, right? ---Nice try. Nice try. Nice try.
Dialogue Script 2
Jenny: I just go some new fall fashions.
Peter: Cool! Show me!
Jenny: Here. What do you think?
Peter: You bought five striped shirts?
Jenny: That's the style this year.
Peter: Well, at least they're all different.
Jenny: Yeah, some are vertical. Some are horizontal.
Peter: I like that one.
Jenny: Me, too. It's got thin stripes on the top and thin ones on the bottom.
Peter: You can wear it with your plaid skirt.
Jenny: No way, Peter. You never wear stripes with plaid!
Peter: It was just an idea!
Jenny: You have to be careful with stripes.
Peter: Why?
Jenny: They have an optical illusion effect.
Peter: Oh! I know. Vertical stripes make you look thin and tall.
Jenny: But horizontal stripes can me you look fat.
Peter: Now I know why most of your shirts have vertical stripes.
Jenny: To make me look better. It works!
Peter: It may help, but you still have a long way to go...
It was just an idea! It was just an idea! 我们来举个例子,---Are you out of your mind? There's no way I can afford to go to Europe on my vacation! ---Hey, take it easy, it was just an idea!
It's just an idea. 比如说,---I'm not sure...if I buy this car, I'll have to pay a lot for insurance. ---It's just an idea.
To make me look better. It works! It works!也是一个又短又好用的小句子,它可以用在某事物发挥了作用的时候,比如说,---Does this tie look good with this suit? ---Yeah, it works. It works! 比如说,---Did your plan work out?---It worked.
