A Beijing health official says the city is working closely with the World Health Organization and neighboring provinces and municipality to ensure no epidemics during the Olympics, and any public health emergency will be handled timely and effectively.
Zhao Tao is in charge of the disease prevention department under Beijing Municipal Health Bureau. He told the media that monitoring systems both inside and outside the city have been set up to share information on disease control and prevention.
"We have carried out a series of risk evaluations for major illnesses like respiratory infectious disease in Beijing since 2006. As many athletes and spectators from across the world will come to Beijing, we have also conducted pre-assessment on possible imported infectious diseases."
Zhao Tao added that special attention should be paid to the prevention of enteritis and virus from rotten food as the hot summer is approaching.
In this regard, Beijing has launched mechanisms to monitor the quality of food and drinking water. Health authorities have also established real time reporting system to oversee and treat five prevailing diseases, such as fever, diarrhea and jaundice.
So far, Beijing has stored sufficient medicine, blood and other medical facilities, with over 3, 000 medical professionals and nearly 180, 000 medical staff members prepared for emergencies.
