Ever since the strong earthquake hit Sichuan Province, people from across the country have been extending their helping hands to the quake victims, donating money or daily necessities.
Overseas donations have also been flooding into the quake-hit areas.
The Beijing News carried a commentary saying that what concerns the public now is whether these donations and government subsidies can reach the victims on time.
The National Audit Office decided last Friday to start auditing work on disaster relief funds and materials for the earthquake areas.
The Beijing News says it is quite necessary to take such measures.
The paper says people have confidence in the majority of the officials and the NGO staff members. But setting up a strict auditing system can help put more restraint on the officials to reduce chances of corruption.
In addition, the paper suggests the monitoring channels be further broadened. It says the government can encourage more public involvement by setting up hotlines to report corruption.
It also advises the government dispatch inspection teams to monitor various aspects of the disaster relief work.
What's more, it says the press should also serve as a strong force in conducting supervisory work.
