The massive earthquake in Sichuan Province has left many kids orphaned.
Now, thousands of people in China's big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have registered to adopt these orphans.
The Guangzhou-based Guangzhou Daily carries a commentary saying that Chinese people's enthusiasm to adopt the quake orphans reflects their strong feelings for the wounded nation.
They are not only sharing the government's responsibility to look after these children, but they've also demonstrated the united strength of the Chinese nation in combating the catastrophe. The paper says such deep feelings and sense of responsibility are worth cherishing.
But the paper suggests that people conduct fine evaluation over their own conditions before making hasty decisions, including their long-term financial status, health conditions, and the general atmosphere within their families.
The paper says that people should also take the perspectives of these orphans to see whether the children could adapt to a new life in their adopting families.
Most probably, it will take much time for these physically or psychologically wounded orphans to integrate into new families. They may find it hard to accustom to the new habits, new dialects, or anything different in their new families.
If the adopting families do not get prepared for all possible obstacles, the article says, they may fail to reach harmony with these adopted children.
The paper also notes that while many families are now offering hands for the orphaned kids, the government may have to pay more attention to elders who have lost their families or were crippled by the tremor.
