To support media coverage of the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay at Mt. Qomolangma, an internet café was established at the 5,200-meter high Base Camp on April 18. Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Lenovo provided the technical and equipment support for possibly the highest Internet café in the world.
Li Ji with Lenovo says this café can meet the demand of the reporters.
"There are about 10 laptops in this café, a server and a printer. In addition, 12 skilled technicians will work in turns to provide technical support for the reporters."
The news center at Rongbuk Monastery is situated at an altitude of 5,000 meters. The Base Camp at Mt. Qomolangma is at 5,200 meters. The lowest temperature at the two locations may reach minus 20 degrees Celsius at night, while the highest can climb to 25 during the day, spanning a whopping 45 degrees.
Zhang Wei is a server engineer working at the Base Camp café. He says the extreme weather and environment condition pose great challenges to the equipment.
"So far, the server is running well at the plateau. No malfunction just yet. Actually some of the technologies are specifically designed for such extreme weather conditions. Plus, maintenance work is also especially designed to stand the test."
