US scholar: Hu´s visit to Japan a positive development
A US expert on China Studies, David Lampton, has commented on Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to Japan. CCTV reporter in the US asked him for his views on the global significance of the trip.
David Lampton, China Studies director of John Hopkins University, said, "I think it is a positive development, and I don't mean just positive for Japan and China, though I think that's true. But I think it is positive for the United States. Basically, I think the United States has an interest in positive Japan and China relations, because of our fundamental interest's stability in eastern Asia, and it cannot be the stability in east Asia if Japan and China are not cooperative, and also the interest in United States is to develop its trade, economies in the region. And we would like to see China and Japan concentrated on economic development, trade and solving some of the important transnational issues. So I think this is very positive development for the all the big powers in eastern Asia."
