Key points of joint statement

The joint statement released following the summit between President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister,Yasuo Fukuda is the fourth document on advancing strategic and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.

The two leaders agreed that the China-Japan relationship is a key bilateral relationship for both countries. They said long-term cooperation for peace and friendship is the only option for both sides.

The two leaders say consultations and negotiations are the only way to solve bilateral issues.

The joint declaration emphasizes that China and Japan will face up to the the past squarely, look towards the future and push forward their relationship.

The leaders agreed to exchange annual visits, strengthen the mechanism for strategic dialogue and deepen mutual understanding.

The two countries will cooperate in several areas to contribute to sustainable growth of the world economy. The areas include energy, environment, trade, food products and intellectual property right protection.

The two countries will work to make the East China Sea an ocean of peace, prosperity and cooperation.

The two sides vowed to work together to promote the six party talks on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

And the Japanese side reiterated that it will maintain its stance towards Taiwan that has been outlined in past China-Japan joint statements.
