Hospital officials in Iraq's Sadr City claim a US helicopter fired a missile at an apparent target some 50 meters away from the general hospital. It wounded about 28 people and damaged at least seven ambulances.
The US military had no immediate comment about the incident, but said they only engage hostile threats and take every precaution to protect innocent civilians. Shi'ite extremists are known to have operated in a building next to the hospital.
The American military also announced on Saturday that a US soldier died of wounds suffered when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle in eastern Baghdad. Iraqi health officials say more than 100 people were wounded in clashes on Friday and Saturday in Baghdad's embattled Sadr City district.
