Vicki: That’s right, today we’re finding out about a seaside town in South-East England, called Whitstable. I went there to talk to Sophie and Bridgette, two young mothers who live there, and asked them why Whitstable is a nice place to live.

Sophie - There is so much that's good about living here. It seems like a really safe area to live, lots of places to go for lovely walks… it's by the sea so you get all the lovely fresh air.
Bridgette – Whitstable as a place is really beautiful in the summer, it's great to go down to the beach and let the kids play. And in the winter it’s a little bit miserable, cold and windy, but the summers make up for all of that. The beach in Whitstable is… there's no sand, it's all pebbles and the shingle is all the way into the sea so if you want to swim it's preferable to wear swimming shoes.
Youling:Bridgette
Vicki: It’s not a sandy beach, it’s a shingle beach.
Vicki: to make up for something – the summers make up for the winters.
Youling: Sophie
Vicki: safe
Vicki: Fresh air.

Vicki: Another interesting thing about Whitstable beach is the beach huts.
Youling: Beach huts

Bridgette - They are just plain wooden houses with… well shacks really with… there's no electricity or anything, it's just a place where you can keep your stuff for the beach, they're quite picturesque, and all painted different colours all along the coastline, quite beautiful really.
Vicki:The beach huts are made of wood.
Vicki: Shacks. They are all painted different colours.
Vicki: picturesque
Youling:
Vicki: Just for keeping your stuff for the beach in!
Youling:

Bridgette - there's loads of restaurants, good restaurants and fantastic shellfish, your oysters are beautiful.
Sophie – Whitstable very, very much for its seafood and there's three or four restaurants that you can get really, really good oysters .
Vicki: There are lots of restaurants, and in particular you can eat lots of seafood.
Vicki: That’s right, there's one type of shellfish which Whitstable is famous for. Listen again and see if you can hear what it is.

Youling:
Vicki: The local wild oysters are called Whitstable ‘natives’
Youling: Native
Vicki: No, I don’t really like them much…. But I like other seafood so I still enjoyed the restaurants in whitstable.

Sophie - It's certainly not full of your high street chain stores. The small shops, the individual shops and there seem to be more and more lovely little boutique shops.
Vicki: Most of the shops are small individual ones
