The upcoming Labor Day is not just a public holiday, but also the day when the smoking ban in public places takes effect in Beijing.
A survey by China Youth Daily shows that only half of the respondents knew about the implementation of the ban, and just 21 percent feel confident about its effect.
The paper attributes one of the hurdles for its implementation to unease from smokers. One college-aged smoker told the paper it's not an easy task to quit smoking right now, and restrictions on smoking would only make him uncomfortable in public places.
In addition, as characters in many TV dramas are smokers, there is a perception by some audiences that addiction to tabacco is synonymous with being strong, romantic or rebellious. The paper therefore suggests media, especially TV shows to take a lead in non-smoking campaign. It calls on flimmakers to avoid such snapshots so that it will not mislead audiences especially the youngsters.
