An international conference on security cooperation for the upcoming Beijing Olympics kicked off on Friday. Meng Jianzhu, minister of China's Public Security, said the Chinese government and related departments are fully prepared to deal with security problems during the Beijing Olympics. He also noted that China hopes to strengthen international communication and cooperation to ensure a safe Games. CRI's reporter Wu Peng has more.
Representatives from organizations such as Interpol, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, as well as security officials from 120 countries and regions attended the meeting.
Meng Jianzhu, China's state councilor and minister of public security, addressed the conference.
"Security preparations for the Olympics have been finished, and we are fully prepared to prevent and deal with all security threats. The Chinese government and people have the confidence and ability to ensure a safe Olympics."
Liu Jing, vice minister of public security, said a security command system has been established.
The Olympic Games have long been a target for international terrorist groups. Because of this very reason, Liu Jing said China has attached great importance to anti-terrorism efforts for the Beijing Games.
"We have widened our intelligence coverage, and actively dealt with threats from traditional and non-traditional security areas. We integrated the antiterrorist forces effectively and pushed forward construction of the antiterrorist facilities. A multi-layered, multi-field antiterrorist platform has been established."
The Olympic Games is an international event, so the Chinese government has also been working on international security cooperation.
To promote intelligence exchanges, a hotline will be set up between the head of Interpol and Beijing security officials during this summer's Olympic Games.
Ronald Noble, Interpol's secretary-general, said it is the first time there will be a direct hotline between the head of Olympic security and the head of Interpol.
