A senior International Olympic Committee official says no voices of dissention will disrupt the sacredness of the Olympic Games.
R. Kevan Gosper, Vice-Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing Games and an IOC member, made the remarks in an interview with CRI in Canberra. He reaffirms confidence that the torch relay in Canberra will be a success, adding that Australians are Olympic lovers.
"This is a very Olympic country. We have two Olympic Games, in 1956 and in 2000. We had the Athens international relay through, so I'm hoping this torch will get very good reception tomorrow."
Regarding to the security during the torch relay, Gosper says the police in Canberra has made full preparation so there is no meaning for media to sensationalize it.
"They have nothing else to talk about. I think I have been verified with the security responsibility lines, and I think the event will run smoothly."
During its past journey in some cities like London, Paris, and San Francisco, the torch relay has encountered disturbance and disruptions from Tibetan separatists. Gosper states his opinion in response to that.
"They won't win. Olympics are going to be sensational and successful, and when the Olympic flame comes along in August in Beijing, all of these will be forgotten."
Gosper was the former chairman of Australia Olympic Committee and vice chairman of Sydney Organizing Committee. As the Vice-Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing Games, he says he is quite familiar with the preparation work in Beijing and he is proud to see the Olympic flame going through his country.
The Canberra leg of the torch relay will be started on Thursday. Eighty torchbearers will carry the torch along its 16 kilometers journey throughout Canberra, the only leg in Australia.
