As international oil prices keep surging in recent months, many countries have started to develop biological fuels to expand their energy reserves. At the ongoing International Energy Forum in Rome, some participants attribute the soaring gloabl grain prices to the development of the new energy.
Sha Zukang, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for economic and social affairs, said that solving the energy problems should concur with global sustainable development.
"Some countries have done very well in curbing energy crises, by producing and using biological fuels. However, the production of biological fuels will consume much water, land and human resources. While the exploitation of biological fuels can help solve the energy crises, it can also reduce grain coverage, deteriorate environmental protection and do harm to the sustainability of social development. To some extent, it has even worsened the current food crisis."
He therefore urged all countries to work together to put forward a proper plan for developing biological fuels.
