A specially designed igniter for Olympic torch relay on Mt. Qumulangma has unveiled.
The gadget looks like a simple pen. Yang Lin is in charge of development of the igniter. She says it can stay aflame for around two minutes, and it has passed a trial at the site.
"It keeps working in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees centigrade, and it may withstand 0.3 air pressure. Even a low-level hurricane wouldn't be able to put it out. "
The trip to the world's highest peak is one of the highlights of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay. However, lighting the torch under unfavorable natural conditions on top of the mountain may prove difficult. That's why an efficient ignition device will play a crucial role in keeping the Olympic torch aflame. To keep with the "Green Olympics" concept, the gadget is free from harmful smoke and smells.
