More than 1,100 industry and government leaders, from over 75 countries worldwide, have convened in Dubai for the eighth edition of the Global Travel and Tourism Summit, seeking to outline the responsibilities the sector must exercise as its global influences increase.
In recent years, tourism is enjoying an ever increasing share of the global economy. Geoffrey JW Kent, Chairman, World Travel & Tourism Council and CEO, Abercrombie & Kent, emphasizes the importance of the tourism and travel sector.
"In economic terms, today tourism costs 10% of global GDP, and 8% of total employment. In other words, one in every 12 jobs in the world today is generated by travel and tourism activity. We represent 11% of total world exports and more than 9% of capital investment across the globe. Furthermore, the power of tourism bringing people together is larger than other sectors."
Kent also addresses global climate change in response to the unusual climate last year.
"The question is like whether or not sustainable tourism works, but rather how we can further the steps already taken through addressing climate change. Rather than depleting natural and cultural resources, we should preserve heritage for the enjoyment for future generation."
This session highlights principal trends in the world in 2008 and beyond, which can constrain the industry's potential for growth, sustainability and responsibility. It also spotlights new opportunities from economic growth, international trade and new tourism markets.
