Chinese vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi says the United Nations should carry out multi-faceted cooperation with the African Union, or AU, in wide- ranging areas.
Wang Yi made the remarks at the UN Security Council high-level meeting on peace and security in Africa. He stresses that the world peace and prosperity cannot be achieved without the stability and development of Africa. He says UN Security Council should play a key role in peacekeeping in Africa, and the AU has an even deeper understanding towards African issues.
He also urges that the UN should strengthen coordination and consultation mechanisms at various levels with the AU on a fair and mutual respected basis in order to promote a sustainable development.
"China supports a predictable, sustainable and flexible framework between the UN and the AU. On the premise of securing its authority, the Security Council should give priority to supporting the AU in playing a key role in solving regional conflicts."
The vice Foreign Minister also points out that the UN and the AU should highlight the capacity building on the cooperation agenda, adding that the UN should assist the AU in personnel training, resources management and financial difficulties.
