The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games has expressed appreciation over the torch relay preparation work in Almaty.

Li Ping is the spokeswoman for the Torch Relay Center of BOCOG.

"The Almaty government regards the torch relay as a significant event, not only for the city, but for all the people in Kazakhstan. We are very satisfied with their preparation work, and want to extend my gratitude for their contribution to the 2008 Beijing Olympics."

Almaty was an important point along the ancient silk road and has had great influence over the cultural exchanges between China and Central Asian nations.

Li Ping said the torch relay is an important approach in spreading the Olympic spirit.

"Olympic symbolizes peace, friendship, hope and brightness. The value of the Olympic torch is shared by every peace-lover in the world. We hope to convey a message through the torch relay, which is, China wishes to work together with people all over the world for a better future."

The relay will pass over five continents and a total of 21 cities outside the Chinese mainland.
