The authorities in Yunnan Province in southwestern China have founded a research center to study the unique culture of the Mosuo ethnic group, in which women have more power than men in many aspects of daily life.
He Shaoquan, director of the center, explained the aims behind starting such a research project on the only matriarchal social system existing in China today.
''The center is aimed to deepen the study on Mosuo people and to protect their culture. Our work is expected to contribute to social harmony and diversity.''
The director added that other non-official groups are also encouraged to be more active in carrying out academic research into the Mosuo culture.
In addition, researchers also plan to hold culture forums and establish online platforms to promote and protect the culture of the Mosuo people.
