With less than 8 months for the Beijing Olympics, souvenirs continue selling well in the capital city.
Besides the income from television rights, ticketing and sponsorship, one of the major revenue sources is the sale of the Olympic licensed products, which are becoming more and more popular in the build up to the Games, especially those made of gold, silver or jade.
In the largest Olympic licensed product stores in Beijing, jade models of the official Games mascots are selling for up to 290 thousand yuan or more than 39 thousand US dollars per set, reportedly a record price for an individual piece of Olympic merchandise.
One of the most popular items in the store is a scale model of the Beijing National Stadium, dubbed the 'Bird's Nest', where the opening and closing ceremony of Beijing Games will be held.
With a limited issue of 99,999 the models are gold-and tin-plated, outlining the detailed structures of the stadium, including the entrances and stairways, as well as the surrounding landscape.
But according to Wang Jianying, Beijing Olympic Flagship store manager, most of the domestic customers are in favour of the products made of gold and silver, such as coins, mascots, pins and badges.
The Olympic coins and other products made of gold and silver are not only souvenirs, they can also be an kind of profitable investment. They are very popular among the customers.
To expand the domestic market, Beijing Olympic organisers also improved the sales channels for the collectible Olympic licensed products.
An online shop for Olympic licensed products was also opened late in July last year.
