China's annual national science and technology award ceremony was held in Beijing on Tuesday. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, along with other senior leaders, attended the event to present awards.
A commentary carried by the nation's leading newspaper, The People's Daily, says the ceremony was held as China is at a stage in its histroy where it is more dependent on scientific and technological innovation for future development. It went on to say that China must strive to enhance its innovative capabilities which are a national strategic priority.
The commentary also urges all scientists to shoulder the glorious mission of creating more outstanding achievements.
An article on Xinhuanet quotes Premier Wen Jiabao's speech delivered at the award ceremony in which he urged government and Party officials to have closer contact with scientists and give their advice more serious consideration.
The author says the premier's proposal underscores the government's consistent policy of respecting science and respecting talent. Government officials must take the lead in promoting new scientific knowledge and create a solid foundation that is respectful of scientific progress.
An opinion piece in the China Daily notes that the two recipients of the State Scientific and Technological Award for 2007, 92-year-old botanist Wu Zhengyi and 84-year-old petrochemical expert Min Enze, were given due recognition at the award ceremony for their outstanding dedication to their scientific research careers.
It says middle-aged and young scientists who have yet to win the awards should learn from these two top award-winners that perseverance pays off.
