Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has announced the appointment of his new cabinet as Ghanaian President John Kufuor landed in Nairobi to facilitate dialogue between the president and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
President Kibaki addressed the nation in a televised address.
I am pleased to announce part of my Cabinet. In forming the Cabinet, I have considered the importance of keeping the country united, peaceful and prosperous under a strong, broad-based leadership.
In the nomination, most posts went to members of Kibaki's party. Kalonzo Musyoka, a minor presidential candidate who won just nine percent of votes, was named vice president and another member of Kalonzo's party was named information minister.
Kibaki's announcement was immediately rejected by Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement. The Secretary General Anyang Nyong'o told a news conference in Nairobi saying that it has absolutely no legal standing since the president is illegitimately sworn in into office.
President Kibaki Saturday invited Odinga to hold their first face-to-face talks since the Dec. 28 elections.
Opposition leader Odinga has said he would only hold direct talks with President Kibaki if Kufuor mediated or under international mediation.
Less than 500 people have been killed while some 250,000 people have fled their homes in clashes between rival political supporters, ethnic groups and the police in the East African Country.
