The 10th African Union summit has opened in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa with African leaders vowing to promote industrialization, integration and economic cooperation on the continent.
The current political crisis in Kenya is also among the hot topics at the summit.
During his address to the opening ceremony on Thursday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon called on a peaceful solution.
I call upon your presidencies, the leaders of Africa, to encourage and urge the leaders and people of Kenya to calm the violence and resolve their differences through dialogue and respect for the democratic process. In the meantime, increased emergency assistance needs to be provided by the international community to alleviate the suffering of Kenyans affected by the violence.
With the theme of Industrial Development of Africa, the AU summit is scheduled from Thursday to Saturday. African Leaders are expected to extensively discuss how to promote the industrialization and economic cooperation.
