Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has called on the country's lawmakers to support peace and stability in the country.
Speaking during a joint parliamentary group meeting bringing together his Party of National Unity and opposition Orange Democratic Movement led by Prime Minister-designate Raila Odinga, Kibaki emphasized the need for all Kenyans to co-exist peacefully, saying the quest for development and prosperity cannot be achieved without lasting peace.
The president has asked members of the grand coalition parliamentary group to support the proposed legislative measures which will go a long way in ensuring peace and stability in the country.
We propose to bring to the house a comprehensive policy, and accompanying legislation that will ensure that the threat to our national security and social cohesion caused by negative ethnicity is neutralized for the well being of our country. So ladies and gentlemen, welcome!
The meeting came after the two leaders signed a power-sharing agreement, brokered by UN-backed negotiators aimed at ending several weeks of political turmoil.
