Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for an ''increased economic engagement between India and China.''

The prime minister also urged Indian leaders to ''study China and identify opportunities for business and greater engagement.''

Speaking to Indian business leaders in Beijing just ahead of his dinner meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, Dr Singh said it is a historic necessity that India and China work together.

Sources say Indian industry wants the government to push against unfair trade barriers by China and that the government has said it has no security problems with Chinese investment in infrastructure.

The PM said that the rise of China and India should be viewed as an ''international public good'' by the global community.

He also said that Indian business is ready to face the brave new world and China is part of that brave new world.''

According to sources, there is a proposal to create an ''investment working group'' between India and China. And India is likely to resist China's demand for a free trade agreement (FTA).
