IF there's anyone who can challenge the fame of Taiwanese rap singer Jay Chou, it's Wilber Pan. Pan kicked off (开始) his singing career in 2002, and fast became a pop star known for his humourous, relaxed style and excellent rapping skills. He will perform at Beijing Exhibition Centre on November 24, 25 and 26 as part of his "Reverse the Earth" (“反转地球" ) national tour.

Pan's performances are marked by his sharp moves and hip-hop style. But in person, he himself acts more like the "boy-next-door". The 25-year-old has a very healthy and positive image (形象) and seldom gets involved in rumours (绯闻) about relationships with other female artists (女艺人).“I'm not the kind of person who likes to make news headlines," Pan said.

He was born in the United States, but left for Taiwan when he was seven and returned to the US to study at a state university. There he was discovered by a record company. That led to work as a VJ (音乐电视主持人) on Channel V in 2000 and a bad-boy role in the Taiwanese drama "Spicy Hot Teacher" (《麻辣鲜师》). After two years of waiting, he fulfilled (实现) his music dream and released (发行) his first album, "Lizard Dance" (《壁虎漫步》).

It's not easy to make it big in the entertainment industry. This was also true for Pan. "People put me down when I first started out because their impression of me was that of a VJ and actor, not a singer," said Pan. "They thought I was fooling around ¨C it took me quite a while to break through."

Pan has had four albums since then, including the most recent (近期的) “Reverse the Earth”this past June. All have been received well by fans. Pan said the secret of his success is persistence (坚持).“Even if you fall down on the stage, you have to get up quickly,”he said.

"Pan inspired me by his activeness. He seems to be always full of energy," a senior high student writes in a post on Pan's fan club BBS.

With his music talent becoming more recognized and his popularity increasing (增加), Pan is now often compared to pop icon Jay Chou. But Pan is quite modest and says he appreciates Jay's songs. He says that the two of them have different personalities. "Jay's always cool, but I'm just acting cool on stage. I'm actually very humourous in real life," Pan said.
