谈到第三种生活方式，到目前为止，我还真是没有搞清楚到底它是什么。我想可能第一种生活方式就是我小时候过的，吃不上、穿不上，特别艰苦。第二种就是最近几年，社会发展得很快，科技也发展得很快，原来粮食都不够吃，现在多得不知道怎么办。我小的时候根本就没吃过苹果，现在家里买的都是几箱几箱的苹果。这可能就是第二种生活方式。然后第三种呢？原来没东西的状态是第一种，有东西、东西丰富了是第二种，然后呢就是吃饱了撑的，这可能就是第三种。现在肚子吃饱了，天天就要琢磨事情，琢磨看看要到什么地方去。

By far, talking of the third life style, I haven’t really understood what it is. I think the first life style is nothing to eat and to wear in my young time. It’s very hard and bitter. The second is in this several years. The society and the technology both improved very fast. In the past, the food is not enough to eat. But we don’t know how to dispose it now.I never eat an apple when I was young. Now, at home, there’re several cases of apples. This may be the second life style. Then what is the third one? Beforetime the state of having nothing is the first style. When we have abundant things, it becomes the second one. Then there’re more spare times, and maybe this is the third one. Now we can eat enough, and then ponder, ponder where can go.

　　为了说这第三种生活方式，我想先回顾一下第一种生活方式。第一种生活方式对我们这一代有着一辈子的影响。在中国像我这样岁数的人，他们吃苦，缺吃少穿是一种普遍现象，可能大多数40来岁的人都有这种经历。我记得小时候经常吃不上饭，大家关心的都是粮食的问题，没人关心这吃饱了撑着的事情。在我们老家一年12个月有7个月的粮食就是最好的情况了，所以能不能活下去就是首要的问题。那个时候我们家里好几个小孩，生活十分地艰难，实在过不下去了，爸爸就劝服妈妈把刚刚出生几个月的三妹送人了，因为在当时活下去是最根本的事情。

In order to explain the third life style, I want to look back the first one firstly. The first life style influenced all the life of our generation. In China, all the people as old as me had a rough time, and food and clothes not enough was a normal phenomenon. Maybe most of the quadragenarian(四十多岁的) people had these experiences. I remember well that there is often no food to eat. Everybody’s concerned thing is the food problem. There is nobody think anything else. In our hometown, if there’s 7 months food in a year, it was a fine time. So the chief problem is to live. That time in my family there were several kids and the life is so hard. It’s difficult to live on, so my father persuaded my mother to give my third sister who was only several months to other person, because it’s the most essential thing to live at that time.

我想,这个时期的生活对我的性格也有很大的影响，在农村的日子养成了我开朗的性格。后来到了南京上学的时候，我就突然变得不怎么说话了。我就一直在想啊，而且我最近也在看这方面的书，这人的性格到底是什么造成的。弗洛伊德说，人的性格和人的经历有关。于是我就回想初到南京的时候，我随身就带了两条蓝色的棉裤，都穿了很久了，还有两条做得很大的内裤。当时班上有40个学生，其中31个都是女生。所以我就特别担心裤子磨破给人家笑话。于是我经常摸摸裤子后面，看看有没有磨破，每次摸的时候都会感觉，哎呀，又薄了。当时顶着这样一种压力生活、学习。我想这可能也就造成了我当时的那种性格。

In think the life of this period influenced my character. I get a sonsy character in the time when I live in country. Then I went to Nanjing for learning, and I suddenly didn’t want to talk. I thought all the time and now I often read books about this aspect. How the character of the people get? Freudian said that the character is relate to the experience. So I recollected the first time I got in Nanjing. I took two blue cotton trousers which wore a long time and two large pants. In the class there were 40 students, and thirty-one were girls. So I was afraid that if my trousers were worn out and I would be laughed at. I often touched my trousers in order to make sure they were not worn out. Every time I touched it I felt that it became thinner. I studied and lived in this pressure that time. I think it’s the reason which made me get that character.

这种就是第一种生活方式。

Thus is the first life style.

　　我大学毕业以后，每月领46元钱的工资，加上8块的野外补助。而就在那一年，我两个妹妹相继考上大学了。我当时的工资一分为三，把其中的两份寄给她们。可是，这怎么生活呢？我说过，活下去是最基本的要求，所以，我就只有跑到深圳去。因为我工作十分勤奋，所以也挣了比较多的钱。紧接着，中国很快富裕起来，有了很多的东西，多得都不知道该怎么办了。

After I graduated from university, I could get 46 Yuan wage every month and 8 Yuan subsidy for outgoing. But, in this year, my two sisters got entrance for the universities one by one. I divided my wage into three and sent two for them. But how could I live? I have said that living is the most essential need. So I went to Shenzhen. Because I worked hard, I got more wage. Then China became affluence quickly, and there’re more things which were too many to manage.

我有一次去广州，见到新世界大厦。他们说这个大楼里面的房子全都贴着金纸。我当时就在琢磨，这钱再多，也不能往墙上贴金纸啊！可这是为什么呢？因为吃饱了撑着了，都不知道该干什么了。

Once I went to Guangzhou and saw the New Century Building. It was said that all the walls in the building were pasted by gold papers. I thought that even you had so many money, you couldn’t paste gold papers on the walls. But why he did that? The reason is that there’s more spare times and nothing to do.

　　所以,我就老是在想，物质生活得到满足之后，我们应该追求生什么样的生存状态呢？我觉得最重要的一点,是人与人之间的关系。在别人不舒服的时候，我们应该尽量去帮助他们幸福、快乐。但是，首先我们必须使自己快乐起来。如果你自己都不快乐，老是板着一张脸，你怎么样让人家快乐起来呢？我想这二者之间是没有冲突的。此外,我认为,我们的生活应该达到一种简单化。简单,是一个非常本质的东西，禅宗思想也是最强调这一点。自古到今，禅宗对中国的影响是巨大的。

So I always think that what life style should we to pursue, when we get satisfaction in matter life. I feel that the most important thing is the relationship of the people. When the others aren’t happy, we should help him to be happy as possible as we can. But first we must make ourselves be happy. If you aren’t happy and make the face so pained, how can you make the others be happy? I think there is no confliction in them. Besides that, I think our life should get into a simplification. Simpleness is a very essential thing, and the zen ideology also emphasize this point. The zen influences more tremendous to China from of old.

所谓“见性成佛，直至人心”，也就是这个道理，心里面怎么想，就直接表露出来。我想这应该是我们谈的第三种生活方式。

The so called “See you heart directly, think the things with no ponder”is also this theory. Whatever you think, show them out. I think this should be the third life style we talk.
