Mongolia's Justice and Interior Minister Tsend Munkh-Orgil on Thursday urged calm in the streets as the political parties try to resolve the post-election deadlock.
Deadly riots erupted in the streets of Mongolia's capital Ulan Bator following allegations of election fraud during the June 29th parliamentary elections. According to Mongolian authorities, the rioting killed five people and injured more than 300.
The capital has been relatively calm after President Nambariin Enkhbayar declared four days of emergency rule on Tuesday to quell rioters who set the headquarters of the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party on fire. Debris has been cleared away as parliament reconvenes to decide how to move forward. Munkh-Orgil is confident that the state of emergency will not need to be extended.
Tsend Munkh-Orgil, Mongolia Justice and Interior Minister, said, "Although we are receiving conflicting messages from different cornders on potential danger or further riots. I believe that clear danger has passed and life will resume its normal course."
The General Election Committee said on Thursday that preliminary results show that the ruling MPRP won my a landslide, winning 47 out of 76 seats. Riots ensured after the opposition Democratic Party made allegations of election fraud on Tuesday. International observers say the vote was largely fair. A concession from the Democratic Party would raise hopes for stability.
