Retired Tibetan mountaineer Konbu, who joined other two Chinese climbers in human’s first successful ascent of the Mt. Qomolangma from the peak’s north side in 1960, holds the torch with the party chief of Lhasa Qin Yizhi on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

(CRI2008-06-21)The Beijing Olympic torch relay passed through Lhasa on Saturday with the cauldron lit by flames from both Athens and Mt. Qomolangma at the closing ceremony.

Starting from Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas in the old times, the route stretched 9.3km before reaching the destination at Potala Palace square.

One hundred and fifty six torch bearers, including 75 Tibetans, took part in the relay, which kicked off at 9:00am.

Retired Tibetan mountaineer Konbu, who joined other two Chinese climbers in the first successful ascent of the Mt. Qomolangma via the north ridge in 1960, ran the first leg, while famous Tibetan soprano Tseten Dolma carried the torch through the last leg.
