Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has urged Pakistan's newly-elected parliamentary leaders to quickly move forward on peace talks with India.
Mr. Singh told India's parliament Wednesday that India wants to live in peace with Pakistan and said the destinies of the two neighbors are interlinked.
He congratulated the Pakistani people for holding parliamentary elections last month and urged the winning opposition parties to, in his words, put the past behind them.
India and Pakistan fought three wars after gaining independence from Britain in 1947, but relations have improved since they launched a peace process in 2004.
Mr. Singh praised several Pakistani leaders for promoting peace with India, including assassinated Pakistani opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and current President Pervez Musharraf.
India and Pakistan have held several rounds of talks on their territorial dispute over the divided region of Kashmir, but progress has been slow.
The parties of Ms. Bhutto and Mr. Sharif won the most parliamentary seats in the Pakistani elections. They are in talks on forming a coalition government together with another opposition party.
