It's been a week since Shangri-la reopened to tourists, and tourism in the region's legendary resorts is already heating up. It has been almost a month since the Tibetan-inhabited region in southwest China's Yunnan Province closed due to riots in Lhasa.

Towering snow-capped mountains, large swathes of grassland and forest -- as well as lakes and highlands -- are all part of the allure for tourists from both home and abroad. The unique folk customs and Tibetan culture found in Shangri-la are also an attraction for many international tourists.
Since the opening of the area where Shangri-la is located, the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the number of tourists has increased. Occupancy rates at three-star hotels in the region are at more than 50 percent.
